I suspect that corrupt cronyism is the number one complaint of democracy activists throughout the Middle East. Democracy is the best antidote to this problem, in that it is the only system that makes officials accountable in any way. Thus democracy is not an end in itself here, but a means to emplace accountability.
Just one of the benefits from the world's least mediocre form of government!
